Hello Jazz Lovers, Wherever You Are,

I’ll Remember April as jazz showered all over the Boise State University campus during the Gene Harris Jazz Festival. Hope you were able to take part in some of the events.

Now on to a Boise Jazz Society jazz date with the Anat Cohen Quartet on Saturday, May 16th in our ol' jazz club at the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy.

Now here’s a good problem you can help us solve:
As our membership has grown substantially this year, we really, really, really need to know if you are not planning on using your ticket/s for the upcoming Anat Cohen concert—click and email Mike at the address below. You need not reply if you are lending your ticket/s to someone else.

Speaking of jazz concerts, we’ve been considering lots jazz artists and talking with their agents for next year’s Subscription Series. (That’s correct, 2009-10 marks our 3rd year)

Here’s what I know: Our 3-concert, $95.60 membership will remain the same as previous years. As we work to bring to Boise the best world-class jazz artists that we can afford, we will continue to balance our jazz programming with a mixture of swinging and mainstream enlightening performers.

Here’s a sneak preview of what’s on our minds, but not fully contracted quite yet:

As we work to negotiate contracts and dates, you can help significantly by responding promptly to our renewal drive. Just print, fill out the Membership Renewal Form and send it, along with your check made out to the Boise Jazz Society, to the address on the form. Also, please let us know if you are not renewing your membership for 2009-10—just click and email Mike at the address below.

I’ll Be Around and looking for The Nearness of You. (I’ve really got to stop this behavior!)

PS: The rental of cocktail tables at Esther’s Place consumes nearly $1000 of our budget per season. If you know where we might acquire some 2X2, 30" used and reasonably priced (cheap) tables with heavy restaurant bases, please let me know ASAP.

Idiomatically conversant with modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango, and an expansive timeline of Afro-Cuban styles, Anat Cohen has established herself as one of the primary voices of her generation on both the tenor saxophone and clarinet since arriving in New York in 1999.

Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Anat grew up with musical siblings; her older brother, Yuval, is himself a saxophonist of note, and her younger brother, Avishai, is one of New York’s busiest trumpeters. She began clarinet studies at age 12 and played jazz on clarinet for the first time in her Jaffa conservatory’s Dixieland band. At 16 she joined the school’s big band and learned to play the tenor saxophone. The same year, Anat entered the prestigious “Thelma Yelin” High School for the Arts, where she majored in jazz. After graduation, she discharged her mandatory Israeli military service duty from 1993-95, playing tenor saxophone in the Israeli Air Force band.
