Hello Idaho Jazz Lovers,

We’ve booked the artists for 2009-2010 Boise Jazz Society subscription series—pianist Benny Green and Trio, pianist/vocalist Dena DeRose and Trio, and guitarist Martin Taylor—all hard-swinging and internationally-distinguished jazz performers—right here in Boise!

So as we move into the throes of summer, let’s get those memberships in! Just download the season flyer below, fill it out, and send it in with your check—don’t forget to add the dates to your yearly calendar.
Your BJS membership of $95.40 (same as last year) entitles you to the 3-concert series and much more, such as the Free Community Jazz Symposia accompanying each of our concerts. We call them “inform-ances”—music, conversation, and an interchange of ideas in a convivial atmosphere, where we meet, hear, and interact with the series artists, gaining insight into their music and a deeper understanding of jazz.

Plus, you’ll be invited to join us for BJS “members only” extras: living-room jazz concerts, jazz listening and film parties, and jazz lectures.

Having presented artists such as Eliane Elias, Anat Cohen, and Jean-Michel Pilc over the past two years, we fully expect that Esther’s Place in the Performing Arts Academy will be filled to capacity. We will continue to keep our performances intimate, in the style of a NYC jazz club, but with Boise prices. Reserve your spot today!

By joining the Jazz Society you help make the Boise jazz scene vibrant and alive throughout the year. Even if you can’t attend all the concerts, your membership contributes to our Boise Jazz Society mission of raising an awareness of the art of jazz, supports educational residencies and workshops for students, and promotes local and regional jazz artists.

Speaking of BJS Jazz Extras, join us for an intimate evening with New York pianist/vocalist Deidre Rodman, at the Boise Blue Note, located in the Belgravia Building at 461 Main Street, Boise, on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 7 pm. Enjoy Deidre, along with saxophonist Brent Jensen and bassist Aaron Miller, in an all-Idaho night of spontaneous jazz happenings. Check out the info on Deidre, Brent, and Aaron below.

Seating is limited to 40 seats with tickets at $20 for renewing Boise Jazz Society members only. Just email me for a reservation, and send your check to the Boise Jazz Society address below to confirm your place.

Please take a look at the stunning performers the BJS will present in our 3rd season, and join us in three weeks as we get In the Mood for another great year of live jazz in Boise!

Happy Summertime, "fish are jumpin" and so is the jazz,

The Benny Green Trio

Benny Green

  • Boise Jazz Society Concert
  • Doors open at 6:15 p.m.; Concert starts at 7 p.m.
  • Esther's Place, Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy, Boise
  • Tickets: $45

Benny Green, veteran of bands led by drummer Art Blakey and bassist Ray Brown and a leader for more than a decade, is some piano player. Green has it all: a sensitive touch, stunning technical command, a gift for ear-pleasing phrases, and a sturdy sense of swing. Benny’s jazz style has evolved through the years. Early on, he embraced boppers such as Bud Powell and Elmo Hope. Then came a bluesy period where blues-and-jazz funkmeisters Bobby Timmons and Gene Harris moved him. Today, Green reveals the influence of swing-rooted Oscar Peterson, his latest way of building drama in his world of jazz.

The Dena DeRose Trio

Dena DeRose

  • Boise Jazz Society Concert
  • Doors open at 6:15 p.m.; Concert starts at 7 p.m.

  • Tickets: $45

"The most creative & compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn," that’s exactly how Joe Siegel described Dena DeRose. She not only awes her audience and music critics with her facility on the piano and her vocal talent, but "…she exudes joy...what soul!" Dena and her trio have developed a hard-swinging and dynamic sound that audiences really dig. From U.S. clubs like the Blue Note, Jazz Standard, and the Kennedy Center to Body and Soul in Tokyo, the Jazz Center in Istanbul, and Alexander Platz in Rome, she delivers "…vivid and exciting demonstrations of how innovative her musical concepts are".

Deidre Martin

Boise Jazz Society presents
Jazz Extra and 2009-2010 Membership Kickoff Concert

Deidre Rodman

  • Thursday, July 23, 2009
  • Boise Blue Note
  • Belgravia Building at 461 Main Street
  • Doors open at 6:15 p.m.; Concert starts at 7 p.m.
  • No–host bar available. Snacks provided.
  • Seating Limited to 40

An Idaho native, pianist/composer Deidre Rodman moved to New York and immediately found musical synchronicity with a number of players from the downtown scene, including Roy Nathanson of the Jazz Passengers where they co-hosted a weekly band night at the Knitting Factory. Deidre’s played on the album and touring production of his critically-acclaimed Fire at Keaton's Bar and Grill, which included vocalists Elvis Costello, Debbie Harry, and Darius de Haas.

Darius De Haas sought Deidre’s musical direction, piano prowess and arranging skills for his Lincoln Center premiere of So This is Love: Variations on Strayhorn, which the New York Times hailed as "extraordinary". Jazz Times called Daydream, the follow-up recording, "one of the finest Strayhorn salutes ever captured on disc", and the album went on to win the 2002 Bistro Award for Recording of the Year.

Meanwhile, Rodman collaborated with Debbie Harry on a version of the song "All the Way" for the soundtrack of Pie in the Sky: The Brigid Berlin Story, which won a coveted AFI Fest Documentary Award. Elvis Costello, with whom Rodman appeared on The Conan O’Brien Show and Live with Regis, has deemed her "a wonderful pianist and delicate composer with a truly unique voice".

Rodman formed her jazz quintet in 1999, and her first Sunnyside recording, Sun is Us, was released in August 2001 to enthusiastic reviews. On their next release, Simple Stories, the quintet was joined by vocalist Luciana Souza and The Neighborhood School Children’s Choir, with the composer’s vocals and melodica rounding out the mix. The Washington Post described it as "crisp and sweet as a bite out of a Fuji apple". She added to the Sunnyside catalogue yet again in 2006 with Twin Falls, a duo record with renowned jazz electric bassist Steve Swallow.

A project very close to Deidre's heart is The Lascivious Biddies, a genre-defying all-female quartet which performs originals and standards-to-be.

Here’s a little sample: Inside White (mp3)

We Couldn't Agree More

Along with his usual artistic aplomb, I think it’s some of Brent’s most soulful playing to date.
