Have you ever how that jazz artist got so good? We all know it takes "talent and perseverance," but you can bet there's also a teacher who nurtured, mentored, encouraged, coddled, and cajoled that talent.
Part of the Boise Jazz Society's mission is to sustain the art of jazz and support the education of young jazz students. We do this through our Community Jazz Symposia Series and the various jazz workshops and residencies that we've sponsored over the last four years. These activities come at additional expense, underwritten by the Boise State University Department of Music, the Boise City Art's Grants, and private donors.
More than ever, we need BJS members and jazz aficionados everywhere to join us in this endeavor by contributing to our jazz student educational activities. We've got just the ticket to inspire you to do so and guaranteed to please you in the process!
All you have to do is buy some tickets and attend our Tenor Madness Concert, Celebrating Sonny Rollins @ 80, benefiting our student education projects and featuring tenor saxophonists Phil Garonzik, Brent Jensen, Dean Jennings, Sandon Mayhew, and Marcus Wolfe backed by New Trio Plus rhythm section; Chuck Smith piano, Rod Wray bass, & Scott Ruesser drums. This all happens on Sunday, January 23, 2011 in the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy (Esther's Place). As usual, it's open, table seating, snacks are provided, and adult beverages available with doors opening @ 6:15 pm and the concert @ 7 pm. FREE PARKING is available: Myrtle Street (Esther's Entrance) -- 8th Street (Between Ballet and Opera Buildings), and Miller Street and 9th (West of Esther's--careful crossing 9th).
We expect these ticket prices to generate an enthusiastic jazz crowd: BJS members only ~1 ticket @ $20, 2 tickets @ $35, 4 tickets @ $40. Non-BJS, General Public: Adults $25 and Students $12.50. All tickets are available at the Boise State University Department of Music or by contacting me.
For BJS non-members, there's still time to join. Mid-season Boise Jazz Society memberships are available @ $50. New members receive a combined $20 savings over general admission prices to both the Tenor Madness and the Lorca Hart Trio Concerts. New members also receive $10 off Gene Harris Jazz Festival Legacy Concert, with pianist Kenny Barron at the Stueckle Sky Center RR Ranch Club on Saturday, April 9, 2011.
Speaking of the 14th Annual Gene Harris Jazz Festival, just go to the home page of http://www.geneharris.org/ and see and hear the wonderful and diverse lineup of fine jazz artists coming to the Boise State University campus, Thursday-Saturday, April 7-9, 2011.
Finally, mark you calendar for our final subscription series concert with the Lorca Hart Trio and vocalist Kenny Washington, Sunday, February 23rd at the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy; Boise Community Jazz Symposium at 4 pm and the Concert @ 7 pm. Check out Lorca's and Kenny's music at our Boise Jazz Society website: http://boisejazzsociety.org/
Looking forward to seeing all of our "Jazz Partners" at the colossal Sonny Rollins' Tribute Concert featuring the "Fastest Tenor Titans North of the Snake River."
