Jazz Fans,
Pianist Niels Lan Doky, born and raised in Copenhagen to a Danish mother and a Vietnamese father and flying in from Paris just for the Boise date, along with bassist, Ugonna Okegwo, London-born, to German and Nigerian parents, together with Wynton Marsalis', All-American drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts!
Niels extensive recording career, which began in 1986, includes 33 albums as a leader and countless albums as a producer or sideman for other artists. His recording work is represented on such prestigious jazz labels as Blue Note, Columbia, Verve and Milestone. He is one of the most influential jazz pianist in his native Denmark and is also among the most popular jazz artists in Japan where his albums have received multiple awards and reached top positions on the national bestseller charts.
Jeff "Tain" Watts holds the unique distinction of being the only musician to appear on every Grammy Award winning jazz record by both Wynton and Branford Marsalis. One of the most in demand jazz drummers in the world today, Jeff initially majored in classical percussion at Pittsburgh's Duquesne University, where he was primarily a timpanist, followed by enrollment at the Berklee School of Music, where he pursued jazz studies alongside such talented players as Branford Marsalis, Kevin Eubanks, Greg Osby, Aimee Mann, Steve Vai and Marvin "Smitty" Smith.
Ugonna Okegwo is one of the most distinctive and sought-after jazz bassists in the world. Critics across the globe have praised him for his rich tone, supple sense of swing, stylistic range and inventiveness. These qualities have not only earned him a place on the bandstand with jazz legends as diverse as Clark Terry, Benny Golson, Pharoah Sanders and Joseph Jarman – they have established him as one of the leading lights of a younger generation redefining jazz for the new century. "He is very individualistic, both in his soloing and accompanying. I love the way he plays in the ensemble," says Tom Harrell, with whom Okegwo has worked for several years. "Ugonna does some really creative things that I haven't heard anyone do with his articulation and timing."
Perhaps, the most worldly and sophisticated, yet blues-based and hard-swinging, jazz artists to visit Boise State this year. Do yourself an artistic favor and hear them live, this Sunday and Monday at any and all of the events below.
Join us as all of the great live jazz events during the month of March.
Warm regards,
Mike
