Hello Friends of Jazz,
In May we conclude our celebratory, fifth Boise Jazz Society season with subscription concert No. 5. We are going out with the spontaneously expressive, improvisationally musical, and always humorous drummer, Matt Wilson and his Arts and Crafts ensemble featuring trumpeter Terell Stafford, bassist Martin Wind, and pianist, accordionist, and Hammond B3 extraordinaire Gary Versace. And yes, we'll have all three of those instruments for Gary to play at Esther's Place on Sunday, May 6th for the free, Boise Community Jazz Symposium @ 4 pm and Concert @ 7 pm. A few general admission tickets are still available for the concert at boisejazzsociety.org. Remember: Doors open 6:15 pm for open, table and concert seating and there's always Free Parking in all Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy lots and across the street at the 9th and Miller Parking Lot.
You will also want to tell your friends and make plans to join us on Monday afternoon for the free, Boise State Jazz Residency with Arts and Crafts. The Inform-ance begins at 2:40 pm and Student Small Group Masterclasses start at 4 pm in the Morrison Center Recital Hall on the BSU campus. (Parking available Brady Street Garage-$1.50 per hour) See the detailed schedule below:
I'm happy to report that we've booked our 2012-13 Boise Jazz Society Season Subscription Series, but it'll be our little secret until the May 6th concert!
As a warm up for the season finale, we've put together another BJS Jazz-Extra, Thursday, May 3rd, 7 pm at the Boise Bleu Note, 461 Main St in the Belgravia Building featuring saxophonist Ian Hendrickson-Smith. All Tickets $20-Available Online @ boisejazzsociety.org. Only 40 seats available--First Come-First Served!
Ian's a New York recording artist and multi-talented saxophonist, flutist, and composer/arranger whose music ranges far and wide indeed--from Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings to Amy Winehouse (really!). To hear his mainstream jazz side, check out these: Ian YouTube 1 Ian YouTube 2 or buy one of his many CDs as a leader.

Dig who is also in the mix with Ian: bassist Aaron Miller (Glenn Miller Orchestra), drummer Kobie Watkins (Sonny Rollins' Band) and pianist Chuck Smith (a Paul Anka survivor). We expect they will keep it spontaneous and swinging.
Our newly-handcarved, Upton Bostonian jazz bass is here. It was given a work-out by Gene Harris Jazz Festival bassist Lynn Seaton, is cared for by bassist and Boise Jazz Society board member Mark Fisher, and will be displayed at the Matt Wilson concert, where you will hear bassist Martin Wind take it for a spin. Thanks to all who contributed to the campaign to make possible this fine, BJS/BSU jazz bass a reality.

Mark and Marcus uncrate our Baby! The Lynn Seaton Trio and the Maiden Voyage!
The Boise Jazz Society is planning something at Chuck's, Boise Bleu Note throughout the summer. We've booked Wellstone Conspiracy, that's saxophonist Brent Jensen and Seattle's Origin Record guys (pianist Bill Anschell, drummer John Bishop, and bassist Jeff Johnson) for Thursday, July 12th @ 7 pm—details coming in the next newsletter, but if you want to be in one of the 40 seats, save the date.
So, don't wait for Some Other Spring, it's time for some BJS jazz to accompany all of your Spring Cleaning.
Warm regards,
Mike
