Friends of Jazz,
I'm still getting a jazz buzz from that Tenor Madness happening last month--how about you? A sincere thank you to all who contributed--we will use the proceeds wisely for student jazz education projects such as the upcoming jazz residency at Boise State University on February 28th. And the public is invited to sit in for FREE. (see details below).
In a couple weeks, the Lorca Hart Trio reconvenes in Boise from points afar. Percussionist, composer, and leader Lorca Hart flies in from LA, bassist Edwin Livingston from Pasadena, pianist Josh Nelson from a weekend at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Fest, and vocalist Kenny Washington direct from his NY highly-acclaimed performances at Dizzy's Coca-Cola Club. Check out this YouTube.
The trio performs music from their new CD release Recollections (available for $15) and Kenny will join his old friends for a swinging and singing evening. This is where the essence of jazz lies--in the spontaneous process of improvisation. Check out what the critics have said and go to the BJS website to listen their music, but be at the concert to hear what happens on this night! Don't forget to come out to the FREE Boise Community Jazz Symposium @ 4 pm--it's a great way to meet-and-greet the artists and gain insight into their creative processes. A reminder that parking is FREE @ Miller Street and 9th (West of Esther's--careful crossing 9th).

"Drummer Lorca Hart brought his nifty, swinging group to the Lighthouse--very grooving jazz--all vibrant performers with an East Coast sound." Glenn A. Mitchell LA Jazz Scene
"There's a lightness in his touch reminiscent of Red Garland, an Oscar Peterson dazzle to Josh Nelson's technique..." Perry Tannenbaum Jazz Times Magazine
"Bassist Edwin Livingston performed with a classically informed virtuosity that recalled Richard Davis." Aaron Cohen Downbeat Magazine
"Kenny Washington killed in New York City. The supremely soulful vocalist played Jazz at Lincoln Center's prestigious Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola--Washington walked away with the audience in his pocket." Andrew Gilbert East Bay Express

14th Annual Gene Harris Jazz Festival Thursday-Saturday, April 7-9, 2011
Three days of world-class jazz in early April--all on the Boise State University campus in metropolitan environs like the Stueckle Sky Center and the Student Union Simplot and Jordan Ballrooms.
We conclude this year's festival with 2010 NEA Jazz Master, pianist Kenny Barron in the Gene Harris Legacy Concert on Saturday @ 7 pm in the Stueckle Sky Center's RR Ranch Club, perhaps the most sophisticated venue in Boise. This just in! Moody 4B with Kenny Barron wins the 2010 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group.
To make this concert happen, we need the support of our Boise Jazz Society membership and are offering our members a $10 discount off the $50 general admission price. Even better, you may buy a table for 8 @ $320. This is as good as it gets anywhere--a great jazz pianist, a tony venue, a Steinway Rhapsody piano, and a view "to die for." Right here in Boise on Saturday night, April 9, 2011.
Your $10 discount may also apply to the All-Events ticket package--a jazz bargain for 2 matinees and 3 headline concerts @ $125, but for BJS members, $115.
To claim the BJS member discounts above, you must contact me directly and commit to the evening concert by Monday, March 7th.
Call or write for clarifying information and as Mary Lou Williams said, "Keep Walkin' and Swingin'."
Mike
